Sri Lanka and EU discuss port development and green energy cooperation
Sri Lanka and the European Union have discussed potential support for port development projects under the EU’s Global Gateway initiative and ways to strengthen cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
The talks were held recently at the Ministry of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy between Minister Anura Karunathilaka and a European Union delegation led by Mr. Peteris Ustubs, Director for the Asia-Pacific region.
The EU delegation expressed appreciation for the Sri Lankan Government’s initiatives in renewable energy generation and energy storage technology. It also discussed possible ways to support the green transition in energy production. Karunathilaka briefed the delegation on the government’s ongoing renewable energy projects.
The two sides exchanged views on developing container terminals to increase the overall supply and transport capacity of the Port of Colombo. Proposals to establish a green energy hub in the vicinity of Trincomalee Port were also discussed. The minister highlighted the need to conduct a feasibility study on the proposed initiative.
