Route assessment held for proposed Kandy Metro Bus Service
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena led a special route assessment on October 15 to identify routes for the proposed Metro Bus Service in Kandy and its suburbs.
The initiative is part of the government's plan to expand the Metro Bus Service, currently operating in the Western Province, to other major cities across the country.
The initial route assessment was carried out from Kandy to Gampola, covering Senanayake Street, Dalada Veediya, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Mulgampola, Getambe Junction, Galaha Junction, Peradeniya, Angunawala, Gelioya, Weligalla and Kahatapitiya before reaching the Gampola Sri Lanka Transport Board depot. The proposed route is approximately 19 kilometres long.
Road improvements and the development of necessary infrastructure are also planned to support the service.
Lanka Metro Transit (Pvt) Ltd currently operates 122 buses across seven routes in the Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara districts. The company plans to expand the service to Kandy, Jaffna and Galle in the coming years.
A discussion on implementing the proposed Kandy Metro Bus Service was also held with the participation of police traffic officials and representatives of relevant government institutions.
