Heavy showers exceeding 75 mm likely in several provinces today

Heavy showers and strong winds are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today (25) as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal weakens into a depression but is still expected to influence the country, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The department said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-Western provinces, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm likely at some places in these areas. It said the impact of the weather system on Sri Lanka is expected to gradually decrease from today as the depression weakens.

Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
