Speaker to announce Supreme Court determination on 22nd Amendment today

Parliament is due to meet at 9.30 a.m. today (22), with Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne scheduled to announce the Supreme Court’s determination on the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution. The determination is to be presented to Parliament after the sitting begins.

The 22nd Amendment Bill was presented to Parliament on August 18 by Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara. Several petitions challenging the Bill were subsequently filed before the Supreme Court. A five-member bench headed by the Chief Justice considered the petitions and informed that its determination on the constitutionality of the Bill would be communicated to the Speaker.

The Committee on Parliamentary Business has decided to hold the parliamentary debate on the 22nd Amendment Bill on September 24 and 25.
