The opposition claims Sri Lanka will incur a loss of US$ 1,000 million through the handover of the Yugadanavi Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya to an American company.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Attanayake said the government should educate the public pertaining to the contents of the agreement it reached with a US-based company.

MP Attanayake questioned whether the US-based company which will take over the shares will become the sole LNG supplier in the country during the next five year.

He also questioned whether based on the agreement, the government should purchase 75 percent of LNG production from the company and failing which it should pay for the cost.

MP Tissa Attanayake also requested the government to reveal the pricing formula which will be used to determine the price of a unit of electricity to be sold to the Ceylon Electricity Board.

On a separate note, Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake claimed that due to the actions of the government, persons are unable to continue farming in the country.

MP Attanayake therefore requested the government to provide the rate the farmers are demanding for a kilogram of paddy.

He said the present crisis escalated after the government decided to set a Maximum Retail Price of Rs.50 per kilogram of paddy.

MP Attanayake noted that the mill owners and traders are unwilling to comply with the regulations and no one is respecting the gazettes issued by the government.

He said the issues will result in a major rice shortage in the country.

MP Attanayake said the public did not expect such actions from the present administration.
