The nine individuals who behaved in an unruly manner at the Yala National Park by recklessly driving defenders and pickup trucks have been released on surety bail.
The group was released on Rs.500,000 surety bail each by the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court today (26).
The nine individuals surrendered to authorities this morning (26) while seven vehicles were also handed over to authorities.
The group of nearly 100 individuals entered the park last Saturday in 33 jeeps.
The attention of the Department of Wildlife was drawn to the incident after several videos were released on social media of the manner in which the group traveled in the vehicles.
The Department said officers are closely monitoring the violation of wildlife laws through CCTV footage.
The Department stated that steps will be taken to inform Court of the developments.
A wildlife officer and six volunteer guides who accompanied the groups also recorded statements pertaining to the incident.
Meanwhile, subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said he issued directives to carry out an impartial investigation into the incident and bring the accused to book.
