Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera says the final decision pertaining to the stock of plastic pellets which had washed ashore following the fire onboard the X-Press Pearl container vessel will be taken based on the advice of the Attorney General and the committee appointed over the matter.

The matter was discussed yesterday when a review meeting was called virtually to discuss the impact and the damage caused to Sri Lanka by the fire onboard the X-Press Pearl vessel.

During the review meeting the Environment Minister has said 1,400 tonnes of plastic pellets that were washed ashore after the fire have been stored inside 40 containers at a warehouse in Hendala.

Speaking to media, Minister Amaraweera said several plastic manufacturing companies and other entities have express willingness to obtain the stocks to produce plastics.

The Minister said he has given instructions to the Central Environmental Authority to preserve the stocks since it will be used as evidence during the on-going court case related to the X-Press Pearl vessel.

Minister of Justice Ali Sabry chaired the review meeting while representatives of the Ministry of Fisheries, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, the Marine Environment Protection Authority and the CEA participated in the discussion.
