Workers’ remittances directed through official channels have increased by 16.4 percent in August in comparison to the month of July.
In July, remittances amounted to US$ 279 million, while in August the amount increased to US$325 million.
Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said accordingly, workers’ remittances in August have increased by US$46 million.
Minister Nanayakkara while thanking the expatriates for using the official channels to send their money to the country noted that Sri Lanka needs the support of all Sri Lankan living overseas at present.
Meanwhile, the number of persons registered with the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau to leave for employment overseas this year has surpassed 200,000.
Minister Nanayakkara noted that they were aiming to send 300,000 Sri Lankan overseas this year for employment but the target will be revised to 330,000.
