COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Mahinda Deshapriya-led Delimitation Committee has proposed to reduce the number of members of Local Government Bodies to 4,714 after demarcating new wards.

The proposal, if implemented will reduce the number of local government members by nearly half, saving massive sum of money spent by the state on maintaining councilors of Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas across the country.

According to the existing system, more than 8,000 local government members will be elected at the next election.

The proposal is included in the report compiled by the five-member Delimitation Committee headed by former Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.

The committee was appointed to demarcate wards of Local Government Bodies and reduce the number of councilors in November 2022.

The gazette in this regard was issued by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in his capacity as the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government.

The committee consists of Jayalath RV Dissanayake, WMMR Adikari, K Thavalingam and IA Hameed in addition to Mahinda Deshapriya.

The Office of the Prime Minister said the committee handed over the report to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena this morning.
