The Samagi Jana Balawegaya will not support the draft 21st Amendment to the Constitution if the President is granted the opportunity to continue to hold ministerial posts.

Addressing a media briefing, SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara stated the draft of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution presented by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe allows the President to continue to hold ministerial posts.

The MP noted the proposal by Minister Rajapaksa did not include the abolishment of executive presidency.

MP Bandara added the President should be appointed by Parliament and act upon the advice of the Prime Minister.

The SJB Parliamentarian stated such proposals were to ensure that democracy in Sri Lanka is upheld.

He called for the formation of a national council that allows the public to be involved in running the country.

MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the national council should consist of eight representatives of Parliament including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and relevant Ministers and leaders of parties.

MP Madduma Bandara said the council should further consist of qualified professionals in the respective fields including Engineers and Lawyers.

He added steps should be taken to stop politicians from changing political parties based on self interests.
