The Public Health Inspectors Union says approval will be granted to direct individuals engaged in protests and social gatherings to quarantine in the event recommendations are sought by the Police.

Chairman of the Union Upul Rohana speaking to media said it is the responsibility of all citizens to abide by quarantine regulations.

Rohana said strike actions were held along roads and main towns disregarding health guidelines adding that the gatherings were unnecessary.

He requested trade unions to be mindful of the COVID-19 situation in the country, adding that while they understand their struggles, adhering to health guidelines is crucial, especially maintaining social distancing and wearing a face mask.

Accordingly, Upul Rohana said in the event the Police seek recommendations to direct such groups to quarantine, the PHI will not hesitate to issue such orders given the seriousness of the virus.

He claimed the coronavirus situation is worsening, with the country’s caseload increasing daily with symptoms also relatively high in infected patients.

He noted that according to health authority’s treatment centres are nearing capacities while the need for oxygen is also increasing.
