The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says an inquiry must be conducted into the underlying reasons behind China granting Sri Lanka loans.
Speaking at a media briefing today, Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva said many countries that China has provided loans too, lay claim to various assets in the respective countries to call it even.
MP de Silva taking Zambia as an example said, China has provided many loans to Zambia, adding that with the country now claiming they are unable to repay loans China is demanding the country’s copper, gold and silver reserves.
The MP said a Sunday newspaper today carried a research, of Angola, Zimbabwe, Mongolia and Sri Lanka adding that, the common factor is when a loan is obtained from China unlike the International Monetary Fund, the borrower must abide by the country’s conditional regulations.
The Parliamentarian said the IMF in turn does not demand resources, unlike country’s that demand natural resources, political support of geographical location benefits.
