The opposition accuses the government of deceiving the general public by publicising inaccurate data regarding the coronavirus situation in the country.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo this morning, Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said although some individuals who are part of the government have admitted that inaccurate information are being disseminated on a daily basis, it is regretful that no effort has been taken to rectify them.

MP Madduma Bandara said Sri Lanka is enduring one of the worst crises in the history under one of the most corrupt regimes.

He said although the government is staging media spectacle, Sri Lanka has now become the country with the highest coronavirus mortality rate.

MP Madduma Bandara noted that the present administration has failed to mitigate the crisis efficiently and it has now requested even coronavirus infected individuals to remain at home.

He said individuals are dropping dead like flies at home due to lack of adequate treatment.

MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said several trade unions including the medical doctors’ unions and the Public Health Inspectors’ Union have urged to lock the country down.

He said despite repeated calls, the government is not placing the country under lockdown since it cannot afford to provide relief to the public.

MP Madduma Bandara said trade unions that support the government have also challenged the data published by the government and called for strict restrictions.

He said the country is experiencing the current crisis since the government failed to take accurate decisions in a timely manner.

Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara also noted that policies that were in place when fighting the militants cannot be used to mitigate the coronavirus crisis.

He said Sri Lanka now has a dictatorial rule which disregards advice and guidance of health experts.

MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara said the present government as soon as it came to power provided relief to its associates and allowed its associates to scam through sugar imports and rapid antigen kits.

He said while the people are suffering due to the health crisis, the government is continuing its programme to further its interests.

The Parliamentarian noted that the current government is not keen on helping the people but will do anything to retain power.
