Director General of the World Health Organisation Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a message to President Ranil Wickremesinghe says essential medical supplies amounting to USD 4 million will be provided to meet urgent health needs of the Sri Lankan people.
The WHO Director General issued a congratulatory message to Ranil Wickremesinghe on his appointment as President.
The statement by the Director General said the procurement of essential medical supplies to Sri Lanka has already commenced while the dates and distribution lists will be revealed by the WHO Sri Lanka office.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom said the World Health Organisation recognises the economic pressure Sri Lanka is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rising food and oil prices adding that the WHO is prepared to support Sri Lanka during this challenging period that has had an impact especially on vulnerable communities
. The Director General said he issued directives to initiate a WHO health emergency programme to take immediate measures to meet the essential health needs of the Lankan people.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus further stated that the WHO is closely monitoring the health risks to the public, including the health system’s performance and resilience, and will provide necessary technical support to strengthen provincial health services in Sri Lanka.
