The Ministry of Trade says the opportunity will be granted to import wheat flour through an open account system from today (28) till the 31st of December.
A discussion was held today between the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Safety and representatives of the Importers of the Essential Foods Association.
The discussion was held in order to provide the public essential food items at low prices without any shortages during the upcoming festive season.
Attention was directed to reduce prices of imported bakery products including bread and to control the price of wheat flour.
Samples have been directed to the Government Analyst to test the quality of wheat flour available in the market.
The Consumer Affairs Authority and individuals involved in wheat flour related products have lodged complaints over the quality of imported wheat flour available in the market.
Accordingly, in order to test the quality of wheat flour, samples have been obtained during raids.
The Sri Lanka Standards Institute and the Controller General of Food Imports and Exports are not vested the power to inspect the quality of wheat flour, while according to the Food Act such powers are vested with the Public Health Inspectors.
