Minister of Justice Ali Sabry says he hopes to enforce the regulation of granting a week’s leave for inmates with good conduct.
Minister Sabry said relevant provisions for this measure are vested in the Prisons Act.
A group of inmates, convicted over various offences, have been engaged in a protest on top of a roof of the Welikada Prison for several days.
During a visit to the Welikada Prison to inquire into the matter, the Minister drew attention to several issues affecting inmates including delays in filing appeals, reducing sentences of inmates serving sentences based on good behaviour, implementation of a stringent rehabilitation system and the establishment of a common method when granting pardons.
Minister Sabry said he will discuss the concerns with the President in order to provide a prompt solution.
