COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has refuted claims made by certain trade unions and speculative media reports regarding a shortage of coal to operate the Norochcholai Power Plant.
Issuing a statement, Minister Wijesekera said 30 coal shipments are required to operate the Norochcholai Power Plant at full capacity this season as per the generation forecast of the Ceylon Electricity Board.
The Minister confirmed that authorities are in the process of unloading the 23rd consignment of coal.
He said three more consignments of coal have already reached Sri Lanka and will be unloaded shortly.
Minister Kanchana Wijesekera added that 27th to the 29th coal cargos have been nominated and they are scheduled to reach Sri Lanka before the 1st of May.
He also said the 30th consignment of coal has been nominated and is expected to reach Sri Lanka during the first week of May.
The Minister said therefore they have the required coal stock to operate the Norochcholai Power Plant at full capacity.
