COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Award-winning film director Sumithra Peries has passed away.
She passed away this morning at the age of 88, while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.
She was the wife of world acclaimed cinematographer late Dr. Lester James Peries.
Sumitra Peries was born Sumitra Gunawardena on the 24 of March, 1935 in the village of Payagala and later raised in her paternal hometown.
She went on to marry the most prolific Sri Lankan film director, Dr. Lester James Peries in 1964 in Colombo.
Of her films the more popular ones are Ganga Addara, Gehenu Lamai and Yahaluvo.
Sumithra Peries also held the post of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France, Spain and the United Nations in the 1990s.
