Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva says the vaccination of individuals between the ages of 20-30 commenced on recommendation of health experts.
The Army Commander said the President instructed health experts to table recommendations on whether booster shots should be administered to those over the age of 30 or if the vaccination drive of individuals between the ages of 20-30 should commence.
General Silva said the vaccination of the 20-30 category was accordingly launched yesterday.
He however said around 800,000 individuals in the age category have already been vaccinated.
Among these individuals are those employed in essential services, including apparel sector workers.
The Army Commander said another eight million COVID-vaccine doses are due to arrive in the island within the coming week.
Furthermore, commenting on the vaccination of persons between the ages of 12-18, General Silva said 3.5 million individuals in the age group will be vaccinated according to the health recommendations.
Meanwhile the Army Commander said the final decision pertaining to quarantine curfew will be reached at the meeting of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 today, after considering the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic in the country in recent days.
