State Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama says a decision to make vaccination a mandatory criterion to use public transportation, has not been reached thus far.

Speaking to media at the Government Information Department today, the State Minister noted that it is not a practical decision to take at this point.

He explained that one vaccine dose will not provide a major cover against the novel coronavirus, adding that the second jab must be given to a majority in the country at least two weeks prior to enforcing the law.

Therefore, State Minister Dilum Amunugama revealed that the government may implement the programme in future.

Media questioned the State Minister if certain protocol is in place to prevent individuals travelling in inter-provincial buses, for non-essential purposes.

In response, State Mister Amunugama noted that security forces did not have the capacity to check and enforce quarantine regulations on all vehicles or passengers crossing inter-provincial boundaries.

He stressed that filing charges against a majority will not yield a notable result, adding that individuals must be responsible for his or her hygiene and protection, since the government cannot be responsible for every detail.
