Parliament is scheduled to convene under new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at 10 this morning.

When Parliament sitting was abruptly called off in the first week of May, Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Prime Minister of the country.

However, Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe on the 12th of May took oaths as the country’s Prime Minister for the sixth occasion.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Business Committee is due to meet at 8.30am for a special meeting.

Seat allocations within the Parliament chamber, agenda for the week and other motions are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will take the seat allocated for the Prime Minister within the Parliament chamber today.

Seat allocations in Parliament are currently being made based on seniority and the support the new Prime Minister receives to run the government.

Meanwhile, Parliament will elect a Deputy Speaker this morning due to the resignation of Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. Names of Ajith Rajapakse and Rohini Kumari Wijerathna have been proposed for the Deputy Speaker’s post.

Meanwhile, the No-Confidence Motion presented against the President is also expected to be taken up in Parliament today.

Accordingly, separate voting will take place to suspend Standings Orders and regarding the Motion tabled against the President.

According to the current programme, MPs are due to vote on three separate matters in Parliament today.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in and around Parliament. Military and Police personnel have been deployed in the vicinity of Parliament.
