Deputy Leader of the United National Party Ruwan Wijewardene has written to Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne requesting the immediate arrest of individuals who attacked protesters opposite Temple Trees and Galle Face Green on the 9th of May.
Former State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene said it is concerning that the main perpetrators of the incidents are still at large and only one individual has been apprehended thus far.
The UNP Deputy Leader noted that nine lives were lost and numerous public and private property were damaged due to violence erupted across the country following the incidents in Colombo.
He said therefore it is concerning that more arrests have not been made despite the lapse of almost a week.
The Former State Minister of Defence noted that a complaint has also been lodged in this regard while submissions have been made in court, with names of individuals who were directly behind the attack.
The UNP Deputy Leader added that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has given him the task of holding discussions with protesters at Galle Face green and arriving at decisions to resolve their concerns.
He said he is facing difficulties in winning the confidence of the protesters due to the delay in apprehending the attackers.
UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene therefore requested the IGP to conduct a comprehensive investigation regarding last week’s violence and bring all those who are responsible to book.
