The opposition claims the country will have to face serious repercussions due to the actions of the present administration.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Thalatha Athukorala said, during an update to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Human Rights Commissioner highlighted grave concerns about the militarization of state institutions in the country.
MP Athukorala said if the government fails to address the concerns raised at the council, the people and the country have to suffer in future.
On a separate note, Parliamentarian Thalatha Athukorala said the government is staging media spectacles instead of taking steps to reduce the prices of rice and other essential commodities.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Thalatha Athukorala said although the government is attempting to portray to the public it is carrying out raids to seize stocks of paddy, the officials are using taxpayers’ funds to visit rice mills and warehouses to make purchases.
MP Athukorala noted the Commissioner General of Essential Services, the head of the Consumer Affairs Authority who is a military officer and another military officer are leading an entourage of more than 15 vehicles to visit mills and warehouses.
She said the public is spending for such visits which can be done without having to deploy a large number of vehicles and officials.
MP Athukorala said the government is only required to implement a stringent mechanism to purchase the paddy stocks and not a media show with military officers.
She also accused them of intimidating innocent farmers and traders during such visits.
