The Sri Lanka Railways says the unauthorized removal of signal cables from the main system near Kelaniya led to train delays along the Main line and the Puttalam line yesterday.
Speaking to NewsRadio, General Manager of the Railway Department Dhammika Jayasundara said signal cables had been removed from the main system near a bridge in Kelaniya and had been stolen.
General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara noted that they have informed the relevant Police station pertaining to the incident.
He said the signal system was repaired and restored by afternoon.
The Department yesterday announced that it has decided to launch a special investigation pertaining to train delays reported last morning, as a result of an error in the signal system.
The error was reported in signal lights along the Main line and Puttalam line.
Inter-provincial trains resumed operations yesterday, after it was suspended due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in the country.
