COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Two student leaders of the University of Peradeniya have been instructed to vacate university premises immediately.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Terrence Madhujith said the current President of the Peradeniya University Students’ Union and its former President who were temporarily suspended have been instructed to leave the university premises.

Prof. Terrence Madhujith said the two students in question will not be permitted to remain in the university hostel.

He also said the duo must obtain permission in advance from authorities before entering the university premises.

The two students were suspended over the attack on the former Vice-Chancellor of the Peradeniya University, Prof. Athula Senaratne and his son.

Meanwhile, 12 students arrested for assaulting the former Vice Chancellor are in remand till the 4th of January.

The 12 youth were produced at an identification parade at the last hearing, while six students were identified by the former Vice Chancellor, his son, and four others.

Charges have been filed against the suspects under the Public Properties Act.

The group was arrested based on a complaint lodged with the Peradeniya Police following the incident.

Police said the Peradeniya Police received a tip-off of a protest by a group of university students on the 10th of December, surrounding the residence of the Prof. Athula Senaratne.

The OIC of the Peradeniya Police, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, and university disciplinarians explained matters to around 300 protesting students to disperse them.

The students claimed that the son of the former Vice Chancellor had collided with two vehicles belonging to university students leading to the unrest.

Accordingly, Police have launched investigations to determine the facts behind the reported accident.

The son of the former Vice Chancellor was admitted to a private hospital after being assaulted by students while Prof. Senaratne was also admitted citing that he too was assaulted and sustained injuries.

The three vehicles reportedly involved in the accident have been seized by Police.
