COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Around two million eggs imported from India several days ago are still languishing at the Colombo Harbour without necessary clearance.
The State Trading Corporation said although samples obtained from the stocks for laboratory tests were directed to the Department Animal Production and Health several days ago, the Department is yet to issue a clearance. The STC said the delays to release the eggs will have several consequences. More than five million eggs have been imported from India so far, following the decision by the Cabinet of Ministers. The decision was taken due to the skyrocketing prices and the shortage of eggs in the local market. The STC said it continues to direct samples from imported eggs to the Department Animal Production and Health to obtain clearance before releasing to hoteliers and bakery owners. A senior spokesperson of the STC noted that they will continue to import eggs with the approval of the Cabinet until adequate eggs are available in the market.
