Two intervening petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court calling for the writ petition filed by retired Army Colonel WMR Wijesundara calling for an order to be issued to postpone the conduct of the Local Government Election to be dismissed without taking it up for hearing.
The two petitions were submitted by Executive Committee member of the National People’s Power attorney Sunil Watagala and National Organiser of the Socialist Youth Union Eranga Gunasekara.
The petitioners claim that the writ petition has been filed stating that it is inappropriate to hold the Local Government Election amidst an economic crisis.
However the intervening petitioners state that the writ petition has no legal basis and stated that it does not highlight reasonable grounds to maintain the hearing of the petition.
They also charge that misleading information has been included in the petition.
Therefore, the intervening petitioners requested the Supreme Court to dismiss the petition without taking it up for hearing.
