Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says true labour leaders do not fight for narrow political objectives.
Speaking during an event at the Temple Trees today, the Premier claimed trade union struggles cannot be carried out in air conditioned rooms.
Premier Rajapaksa said however no individual has been able to silence union leaders.
The Prime Minister said union leaders will continue to fight, despite the many challenges.
Joining the event Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva said Cabinet Papers have been compiled containing proposals to provide a strong insurance scheme and a pension for migrant workers.
The Labour Minister added there are several more issues that need to be resolved.
The Minister said there is a need for a strong social security scheme for the private sector, adding discussions are underway in this regard.
Minister de Silva further said as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government learnt how to safeguard the working community, during an unprecedented event.
