State Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama says the railway service has become an unpopular mode of transport due to the slow pace of train services.
The State Minister speaking during the adjournment debate in Parliament yesterday said plans are in place to modernise all railway lines that are not in use at present to use them as light-rail trains for passenger transport.
He said necessary budgetary allocations have also been made through the 2022 Budget. The State Minister said there are speed limits set at 40, 50, 60kmph for trains adding this is an unpopular mode of transport as a result.
He said commuters are being transported in goods transporting trains.
The expenditure heads of the Ministries of Agriculture and Irrigation and five State Ministries will be taken up for debate during the Committee Stage Debate of the 2022 Budget today.
