Trade Unions representing the energy, petroleum, and ports sectors say they will engage in an immediate joint strike action if the government does not halt efforts to sell a 13-acre land within the Colombo Port, to a foreign company.
The trade union members yesterday held discussions with Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith pertaining to efforts by the government to sell national assets to foreign entities and several other matters.
Speaking to media after talks Convener of the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees’ Union, Ranjan Jayalal said the Cardinal expressed his regret over the future of the energy, petroleum, and ports sectors adding the country is not heading in a positive direction.
Jayalal said the Cardinal questioned them as to why religious leaders and the public remains silent at a time when their voices must be heard.
The Archbishop also pledged his support to the trade union struggle.
Ranjan Jayalal warned the government that they will be held responsible if the energy, petroleum, and ports sectors comes to a standstill.
