Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Wei Wang defeated Karunaratne 21-12 and 21-15.
Niluka Karunaratne will next meet Ireland’s Nguyen Nhat in another group encounter on Monday.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is Karunaratne’s third Olympic Games.
