Today marks World Hearing Day.

Health officials revealed one in every five people suffer from hearing loss globally.

Health officials informed persons should practice caution when using headphones while working from home or engaging in educational activities online, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Division at the Ministry of Health Specialist Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli said World Hearing Day will be held this year under the theme ‘To hear for life, listen with care.’

Dr. Kumarapeli said it is predicted that every one in four persons will suffer from hearing loss by 2050.

She noted people are exposed to loud noises at the work place, while staying in traffic and engaging in recreational activities.

Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli said the pitch of a sound, period of exposure and several other factors may contribute to hearing loss adding that it is important to limit exposure to loud noises in order to prevent hearing loss.
