Three persons died following a landslide at around 5.30 this morning in Udagaldeniya, Rambukkana.
Kegalle District Secretary Mahinda Weerasuriya informed NewsRadio that the incident was reported after a mound of earth collapsed onto a house.
A woman aged 36, her eight-year-old child and another 13-year-old girl died in the incident.
The 40-year-old husband of the deceased woman who sustained injuries has been admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital.
District Secretary Mahinda Weerasuriya said following heavy rains and due to the risk of landslides, the area Grama Niladhari officer had informed the family to evacuate from the house and take shelter at a different location.
He said however the family had ignored the directive.
The Kegalle District Secretary noted members of another family who were also requested to relocate had done so and were unharmed.
District Secretary Mahinda Weerasuriya added that minor flooding has been reported from several areas in the Kegalle district including in Warakapola, Mawanella and Rambukkana.
He said necessary directives have been issued through Divisional Secretaries to provide relief to those affected.
