COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says three coal shipments for the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will arrive in the country on the 5th, 9th and the 16th of January.

The Minister confirmed this while speaking during a media briefing at the Ministry of Power and Energy premises.

Minister Wijesekera said they have also granted approval to the bid tabled by an Indonesian company to supply 12 coal shipments from February.

The Minister said when tenders were opened, they received nine bids.

Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said the Indonesian company made the lowest bid with freight charges and the stocks will be supplied on a 180-day credit.

He said they awarded the tender after it was approved by the Attorney General.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board says the existing coal stocks are adequate to run two generators of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant until the 8th of January.

General Manager of the CEB Rohan Seneviratne said currently two generators of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant are functioning with the available stocks.

He said once they receive the new stocks, all three generators will be operational.

CEB General Manager Rohan Seneviratne noted that they expect six coal shipments to arrive in January and the seventh one on the 1st of February.
