The historic Kandy Esala Perahera festival of the Temple of the Tooth Relic will draw to a close with the Day Perahera this afternoon along the streets of the Hill Capital.

The water cutting ceremony was held earlier this morning in Getambe while the day procession will take place this afternoon, marking the end of the Kandy Esala Perahera festival.

NewsRadio Kandy correspondent said the processions of the four Dewala will also join the Perahera of the Temple of the Tooth Relic this afternoon.

From Hill Street, the Kandy Day Perahera will parade along the DS Senanayake Veediya, Pansal Veediya, Deva Veediya and Raja Veediya and will return to the Temple of the Tooth Relic at 3.27pm.

Meanwhile, the final ‘Randoli Perahera’ of the Esala Perahera festival paraded the streets last evening. The procession took to the streets of Kandy at 6:44pm.

The Nadungamuwa Raja and around 100 elephants took part in yesterday’s procession.

Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara said all health protocols were adhered to during the processions.

The Esala Perahera for the second consecutive year was held without spectators owing to the coronavirus situation in the country.

Meanwhile, the epistle declaring the successful completion of the Esala Perahera will be handed over to the President by the Diyawadana Nilame and Basnayake Nilames this evening.

It will be held at the President’s House in Kandy, marking the official end of this year’s Kandy Esala Perahera festival.
