The Teachers and Principals Trade Union Collective is scheduled to announce whether it will end its trade union action launched over the salary anomalies issue later today.
Speaking to media, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinhe said trade unions will meet today to discuss the decisions taken by the Cabinet of Ministers during last evening’s meeting.
Mahinda Jayasinhe noted that they have observed several inconsistencies in the decisions taken by the Cabinet yesterday and the proposals they submitted to the Minister of Education pertaining to the matter.
He said the Cabinet subcommittee had recommended the proposed 2018 salaries be paid in stages, however he said the unions requested the proposed salary be given under the first phase.
Mahinda Jayasinhe said according to media reports; the Cabinet has also not agreed to implement the recommendations of the Subodhini committee report.
The CTSU General Secretary said they will not agree to it under any circumstances.
He added however they will not reject any proposals made to grant additional allowances to teachers.
CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinhe stressed that they will not end their struggle until a formal announcement is made pertaining to the matter.
The strike action launched by teachers and principals demanding the government to resolve their long-standing salary anomalies issue enters its 51st day today.
Following the strike action, the Cabinet appointed a four-member ministerial committee to compile a recommendations report.
Meanwhile, yesterday, the Cabinet of Ministers had accepted the proposals included in the report compiled by the Ministerial subcommittee appointed to resolve the salary anomalies issue of teachers and principals.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has agreed to grant a Rs.5,000 monthly allowance to teachers and principals, until the proposals are included in the budget.
Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa has agreed to grant the allowance for two months. Accordingly, the Cabinet has decided to request the teachers to resume online teaching activities.
