Talks over teachers concerns ends without a breakthrough

The discussion between teachers’ and principals’ unions and the Cabinet subcommittee appointed to resolve the salary anomalies in the education sector has ended without a breakthrough.

Speaking to NewsRadio, General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said they presented their demands to the subcommittee during yesterday’s meeting.

He said they were asked about the demands of the teachers’ and principals’ unions and the Cabinet subcommittee was notified that unions will only agree to a solution taken based on the Subodhini committee report.

Mahinda Jayasinghe said although members of the committee had informed them that they are in favour of providing a solution based on the Subodhini committee report in principle, they still have to hold discussions with other officials.

He said they have been informed that the subcommittee will hold discussions with the Ministry of Finance and will submit its recommendations to the Cabinet.

He said the Cabinet is expected to arrive at a decision on Monday.

Jayasinghe added based on the decision taken by the Cabinet, unions will decide on whether they will continue their strike action.

He said they notified the committee that teachers’ and principals’ unions will continue their strike actions, including withdrawing from online teaching activities until their reasonable demands are met.

Jayasinghe said they are hopeful of resolving the matter promptly and resuming their services.
