Minister Kanchana Wijesekera says stern legal action must be taken against all individuals responsible for setting fire to residences of Members of Parliament.
The Minister charged that certain opposition political parties extended their support to such incidents including the JVP, Frontline Socialist Party, party leaders of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.
Minister Wijesekera also stated that he will continue to support President Gotabaya Rajapaksa despite the circumstances.
Speaking in Parliament today, the Minister added on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of April the houses of MPs were attacked and surrounded by protesters through the guidance of the opposition.
He said attorneys who protested against the 52-day coup are today supporting individuals who are responsible for the deaths and losses of government MPs.
Minister Wijesekera meanwhile requested the Speaker of Parliament to ensure the safety of all Members of Parliament.
The Minister claimed it is futile if the opposition believes they will suspend their support to the President through such incidents of intimidation.
Minister Wijesekera urged those responsible for assaulting peaceful protesters opposite Temple Trees and destroyed buses to be apprehended immediately.
The Minister also called for individuals who caused unrest in Mirihana to be apprehended promptly including the Inter University Students Federation.
Minister Wijesekera said he is alarmed at how individuals are abusing power during a State of Emergency and are attempting to seize the Inspector General of Police.
He condemned protesters being released on bail within a day to two while Policemen who he claimed attempted to enforce the law were being dealt harsher punishments.
