Minister of Ports and Shipping Rohitha Abeygunawardena says a programme has been formulated to sell stocks of sugar at the Colombo Port, for the lowest price via Satosa outlets.
Sugar importers informed the government that they are facing issues in clearing the stocks from the Port, since the value of the US dollar has appreciated against the rupee.
Therefore, the Minister said talks with sugar importers finalised that the stock will be sold to the public via Sathosa outlets. Thereby late payment fees charged on the stocks of sugar will be exempted.
Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena added such a decision was reached in order to ensure concessions to the public, despite losses being incurred by the government.
He assured the stocks will be sealed, and made accessible only to the Ministry of Ports, the Ministry of Trade and Satosa.
