The Ministry of Transport says sufficient numbers of ‘Sisu Sariya’ buses have been deployed to transport students, in line with the decision to recall students of all grades to school from today.
State Minister of Transport Dilum Amunugama said if a certain school or area requires additional buses, it can be arranged by contacting the Superintendent of the nearest depot.
He added Zonal Education Directors have been informed in this regard.
The State Minister noted Sri Lanka Transport Board owned buses or private buses can be provided if needed, adding the Transport Ministry has allocated funds for this purpose.
When inquired by media regarding complaints lodged by commuters claiming they were charged higher bus fares than the stipulated rates, State Minister Dilum Amunugama said operators cannot charge higher fares.
The State Minister added the government published notices on newspapers on the 4th and 5th of January, with the revised bus fares.
He stated the revised bus fares for all bus categories were also posted on the official website of the National Transport Commission.
State Minister Amunugama said bus fares were increased by 17 percent, with the minimum fare being increased by Rs.3.
