The Ceylon Teachers Union says teachers and principals on strike are only seeking a solution to salary anomalies.
Chief Secretary of the Union Joseph Stalin said following the Cabinet meeting the government stated solutions will be provided through the 2022 Budget and that teachers can continue protests.
Stalin said teacher and principal unions will continue the strike.
He noted when questioned on how the matter will be resolved through the Budget, the government failed to provide details.
He urged the government to resolve the matter by next Monday, and warned that further trade union action will intensify if not resolved.
Stalin said the Presidential Secretariat appointed a committee comprising officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Salaries Commission and the Director of Institutions, and is due to submit a report in two weeks.
He said teachers rejected the move and demanded the report be issued prior to the next Cabinet meeting and called for a solution.
