Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa says the declaration of a State of Emergency amounts to oppression and termed it as inappropriate at present.
The Opposition Leader made these remarks to media when he visited a social media activist currently in Police custody, at the Mutwal Police Station today.
The social media activist was arrested under several charges with the news item trending on social media.
MP Premadasa said a group of lawyers from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will represent the social media activist.
He said the government needs to be aware that the Constitution has ensured fundamental rights adding those rights cannot be taken away under any circumstances.
The Opposition Leader said the SJB will ensure the human rights of civil societies, social activists and the public are upheld.
He said politicians must be able to listen and bear public criticism as it is a citizen’s right.
MP Premadasa said there is no place for a dictatorship in the country adding democratic procedures must be implemented.
He said the public’s right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly must be ensured.
