COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Sri Lankans will usher in the Sinhala and Tamil New Year today.

The transition of the Sun from the House of Pisces to the House of Aries marks the beginning of New Year.

The New Year signifies the dawn of a new beginning with age-old traditional customs and rituals, sweetmeats, fun and games and gifts.

Religious observances are also an integral part of the New Year.

According to this year’s ‘Nekath Seettuwa’, Sri Lankans will usher in the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at 02:59pm.

The ‘Punya Kalaya’ or ‘Nonagathaya’, when all business and work-related activities come to a halt, will be between 08.35am and 09.23pm.

The auspicious time for the lighting of the hearth is at 03:29pm clad in light mixed coloured clothing facing the South and preparing milk rice and a sweet meat made of undu flour.

The auspicious time for assuming work, transactions and partaking in meals is set for 05:05pm.

People are required to clad in golden colour clothing and face east to complete the ritual.

The auspicious time to anoint oil is scheduled for the 16th of April at 09:41am clad in red and yellow attire facing the South with oil containing extracts of imbul leaves.

The auspicious time to set out for work is scheduled on the 17th of April at 6:28am dressed in white clothing facing the South.
