COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Thousands of Sri Lankans are expected to arrive in Colombo today to attend the funeral of award-winning film director Sumithra Peries.
The government has already announced that it will hold the funeral of veteran filmmaker Sumithra Peries with state honours at the Independence Square.
The funeral is scheduled to be held at 4pm. Sumithra Peries passed away on Thursday morning (19), while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.
She was the wife of world acclaimed cinematographer late Dr. Lester James Peries.
Sumitra Peries was born Sumitra Gunawardena on the 24 of March, 1935 in the village of Payagala and later raised in her paternal hometown.
She went on to marry the most prolific Sri Lankan film director, Dr. Lester James Peries in 1964 in Colombo.
Of her films the more popular ones are Ganga Addara, Gehenu Lamai and Yahaluvo.
Sumithra Peries also held the post of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to France, Spain and the United Nations in the 1990s.
