COLOMBO (NewsRadio); Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka says Sri Lanka should continue to spend on defence despite not having a war.
The Former Commander of the Sri Lanka Army made this assertion during the committee stage debate on the 2023 Budget in Parliament.
MP Fonseka said a military force cannot be built overnight and therefore governments should continue to make allocations for the defence portfolio.
The Parliamentarian also noted that without ensuring security in the country, economy cannot be strengthened.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka also requested all factions not to forget the sacrifices made by the military personnel to liberate the country.
He said the country was globally recognized after the military destroyed one of the brutal terror organizations.
Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka added that the military should always be on standby since wars cannot emerge without prior notice.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Sarath Fonseka requested military personnel not to bow to the politicians and their request.
He said military personnel should discharge their duties with dignity and protect the country at all instances.
