COLOMBO (NewsRadio): 1.6 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, donated by the government of China, reached Sri Lanka this morning.
The consignment of vaccine doses arrived in the island onboard two flights of SriLankan Airlines that landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport at 8am and 10:10am respectively.
The stock was received at the BIA by Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi. Minister Wanniarachchi said the vaccine doses received today will be used to inoculate persons residing in the North and Eastern Provinces.
Meanwhile, State Minister Channa Jayasumana said Sri Lanka is expected to receive additional Sinopharm doses next month.
He said accordingly the government is hoping to vaccinate all individuals over the age of 30 years by the 31st of August.
Sri Lanka has thus far received 10.7 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine thus far.
