COLOMBO (NewsRadio); The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation has confirmed that ferry services between Kankesanturai and Puducherry are scheduled to commence in January or February.
The Ports and Shipping Ministry said several local companies and Indian operators have shown interested in operating ferries, following the announcement by the governments of both Sri Lanka and India.
In addition to the Kankesanturai-Puducherry, ferry services are expected to commence between Trincomalee and Puducherry and Colombo and Puducherry next year.
The trip between Kankesanturai and Puducherry is expected to take around three hours and 30 minutes while a ferry should be able to transport between 300 and 400 passengers.
Officials are looking at the possibility of operating ferries on a daily basis after developing the port.
