The JVP says Sri Lanka has become an auction house at present.
Speaking during an event in Nawalapitiya, former JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake said the current debt crisis faced by Sri Lanka is not owing to the COVID-19 pandemic but due to mass-scale financial fraud committed by people in power.
He said while the farmers are facing severe issues owing to the fertiliser crisis, some have misappropriated funds by importing nano nitrogen fertiliser.
Former MP Rathnayake said the country’s resources are pawned or sold on a daily basis.
He said they managed to save the East Terminal of the Colombo Harbour after a series of protests but the West Terminal has been handed over to India. Bimal Rathnayake noted that the government has also handed over a 13-acre plot of the Colombo Harbour to China as well.
He said everyone is aware that a portion of the Kerawalapitiya Power Plant has also been handed over to foreign entities.
Despite the developments, former JVP Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake said the youth should not give up on their struggle to save the country and its resources.
He said now youth at 18 years are keen on obtaining their passports more so than getting the National Identity Cards.
The former MP said the youth should use the fight option as oppose to the flight option and save the country.
He said the country can be saved by eliminating corruption and through the implementation of a stringent programme.
