With the expiration of the official term of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka, the Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs Amal Harsha De Silva was summoned to appear before the Court of Appeal today (20).
Additional (Development) Secretary of the Sports Ministry Prasanna Chandith and Director General of the Department of Sports Development Amal Edirisuriya appeared before the Appeals Court this morning.
The Attorney General’s Department previously made inquiries from the Director General of Sports pertaining to the duration by which elections should be held based on the previous Constitution of the Football Federation.
Accordingly, Amal Edirisuriya informed Court that the election can be held within 69 days while all parties who will contest the election consented to the move.
Therefore, preparations have been made to hold the election in the last week of December 2022.
The Minister of Sports will appoint a three-member election committee under the chairmanship of a Supreme Court or Court of Appeal judge which will be gazetted, following which steps will be taken to identify franchised associations from the currently registered 66 district associations of the Football Federation and plan and implement future election activities.
