St. Joseph’s College Maradana clinched an impressive 34-03 victory over Kingswood College Kandy in the curtain raiser of the 2022 Under-19 Inter-School Rugby League tournament at Havelock Park this evening.
At lemons, Joes led 19-03.
The boys from Maradana were impressive throughout the blockbuster encounter and scored their points through two goals and four tries while the Kingswoodians managed to put over a solitary penalty.
The bonus-point win puts the Josephians led by Teran Karunanayake on top of the league points table.
Meanwhile, Reigning Champions Royal College Colombo will kick-start their league against St. Anthony’s College Kandy at the Royal complex tomorrow evening. In the second game tomorrow, Isipathana College will lock-horns with Science College Mount Lavinia at Havelock Park.
On Saturday, three school league encounters will be worked-off. Trinity College Kandy will take on traditional rivals S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium in Pallekele.
The game will be played for the prestigious Canon De Saram Shield.
Meanwhile, St. Peter’s College Bambalapitiya will take on Dharmaraja College Kandy at the St. Peter’s grounds in Bambalapitiya also on Saturday.
This week’s school league tournament encounters will draw to a close with the game between Wesley College Colombo and Vidyartha College Kandy at the CR & FC grounds in Longdon Place.
All games will kick-off at 4.15pm.
Rugby fans are expected to flock the stadiums in the next few weeks as the school league tournament has returned after a two-year hiatus.
With several unknowns, the league tournament is poised to be a closely contested affair between four schools from Kandy and eight from Colombo.
The 12 ‘A’ Division teams have been divided into two groups.
St. Joseph’s, Kingswood, Trinity, Royal, S. Thomas’ and St. Anthony’s are pooled in one group while St. Peter’s, Isipathana, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, Wesley and Science College are pooled in the second ‘A’ Division group in the 2022 Under-19 Inter-School Rugby League tournament.
